I found this wonderful recipe for Castella cake at Cookpad.com. Japanese call this cake Kasutera and it is very popular in Japan and has its origins from the 16th century when Portugese sailors first visited Japan and Nagasaki. The cake is very soft an spongy and contains natural ingredients only and has a simple taste. I decided to make it this year's Christmas baking gifts for my friends.

These wooden spoons were carved by my sister in-law's partner. They were made a couple of years ago and now that they have been oiled , they are ready for regular use. He makes many other wooden carvings as well. Thank you! We will enjoy these for many years.
